This is a personal blog about gaming and technology. The author of the blog, me, is a devoted gamer and game expert that wants to share his experience of gaming with all of you. This is a blog that will interest both gamers and people who just want to find out something new about gaming or some of the new games that are being published every day. Gaming is awesome, and I hope you will enjoy my blog like I have enjoyed playing the games I write about.
Gamers are often associated with procrastination and waste of time, and even though a lot of us like to play for hours we still feel bad sometimes, after playing more than we were “spouse to”. Is gaming just bad for us? Is playing games just a past time, that has no benefits what so ever? How can we measure the influence of games on our life? Some of these questions have been answered by scientist and gamers who tried to look out of the box.
Who are Gamers?
When someone thinks of a gamer he usually imagines a person who waist hours of his life being anti-social and sitting in forint of the screen. Even thou gaming is usually a solitary endeavor, this is not always the case. Gamers have always found ways to connect and play together, or to challenge each other to a showdown of skills. The internet has made it possible for people who play games all over the world to connect and communicate while they spend their favorite past time together.
Some of the games are challenging and need a lot of cooperation and thinking thru the decisions in order achieve the goal and be victorious. The main part of gaming, especially over the internet, is teamwork and the advancement of self, thru a given or personalized character.
One gamer asked the question, what are the main characteristics of people who play games? And the answer might surprise you. When we take the stereotypes away we can see that these people are highly motivated (they can spend hours doing a single task in order to complete it), they like cooperation, they are creative and capable of improvising when encountering an obstacle.
The thing is, maybe all of these characteristics are ignored in some of the 9 to 5 jobs. Imagine giving the same effort we give while we play games to some of the jobs we have in real life. Sometimes our social and political environment prevents us from fulfilling our full potential, then games make a great substitute for an aspect of life; somewhere where we can be productive, communicative and creative.
Games as Tools for Learning
Some neuroscientists have begun to develop ways to use games to advance our skills and health. These techniques are in the developmental phase, but some of the findings are truly fascinating.
Games can be used to improve our eyesight, even thou most people think that they actually destroy it. Games that make you move your eyes fast over the screen in order to shoot your opponent or to do some other action actually make your eyesight improve. This fact has led to the development of games that are specifically designed to address your eye problem.
Multitasking skills have also been attributed to people who play games. The thing is that during a game you have to change different mental processes in order to achieve your goal. Remember this does not mean that you can do more things at the same time, but that you can change from one action to the other with easy and perform each perfectly.
There are rumors running around that Dante is due for a sequel in Devil May Cry 5. There are speculations that this game will be announced later this year, so I think Capcom doesn’t want us to forget the roots of the franchise. With Devil May Cry HD Collection the publisher wants to remind the old players and introduce the new generation to the PS2 trilogy that helped forge a new breed of action games.
Unlike other brawler genres like action platformers and hack & slash games, Devil May Cry focused more on making players chain different combat combos. The popularity of this genre and the game itself gave birth to such iconic game series like God of War, Bayonetta, and the modern Ninja Gaiden games.
What’s the Game About?
For those that are new to the franchise, the Devil May Cry series is like an action movie. It contains lots of violence, fantastical action and limitless one-liners from its charismatic and colorful protagonist.
The game follows the adventures of Dante, a mercenary who has supernatural powers because of his half human and half demon origin. The game makes a lot of allusions to Dante Alighieri’s Devine Comedy, but the story in these games lacks substance and is mainly comprised of extreme action scenes and set-pieces that serve as a vehicle to move the story from one enemy to the other.
This Devil May Cry HD Collection does not contain fourth part of the franchise or the DmC reboot. The collection features the first three parts of the game franchise, included in the last-gen collection. This version is a current-gen port of a 6-year-game, that features a resolution change from 720p to 1080p but it still harbors the same issues from the last HD collection. The menu of the games is still in the 4: 3 aspects, and this was not changed since the last version was released. Many CG cutscenes are displayed in 4:3 with original resolution, creating an unbalanced effect when it transitions from 1080p this makes the image appear hazy on modern screens.
If you are new to the series than you should definitely buy the game, you will not regret the investment. This is a great way to get yourself acquainted with Dante before the new game comes out. On the other hand, if you are a fan of the series then you should play through it again. The graphics are a bit better, and the game is adapted to modern playing consoles, so you will have plenty of fun. Just don’t expect a complete remake of the game with cool new features, because you will be disappointed.
There are many incredible historical games, that can give you a gaze into the past. Many of these games are not 100% historically accurate. Historical accuracy is often wary hard to achieve in some of the video games, especially if they are more complex, like we have seen recently. Games like Assassin’s Creed Origins, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and Rome: Total War.
When one looks at these games, he can see that many of them prioritize authenticity over accuracy. The games we play must feel authentic to the period they are set in, but they must not affect the key aspects that make the game enjoyable.
For instance, the criticism of Kingdom Come: Deliverance emerged because the game fails to include people that are not just „white “. The game designers defended themselves on the ground of trying to be accurate in representing medieval Bohemia. However, this decision has made some players feel alienated. Assassin’s Creed Origins shows young boys and girls going to school together, even thou this did not happen in Ancient Egypt. This was done, as the game makers have stated, in order to give players a move away for sexism in games and history.
Is History Accurate?
We are familiar with the saying: “History is written by the winners.” This is a fact we are all familiar with, and it means that our account of historical moments is not always accurate. Quite the contrary they can often be far from the truth. Sometimes it takes us ages before we figure out that the person who wrote the history actually lied intentionally in order to preserve an image he thought should be remembered (not the one that happened).
Why do we then insist on historical games being 100% accurate? This cannot be achieved because first of all, we do not know enough of the past to say with such a strong certainty that it looked like we see it now. What history allows us to imagine, the past, and thru this process to come to terms with some of the situations that mankind encountered. Historical games help in this process because they are a tool for visualizing something that existed.
The newest addition to the Civilization franchise is a DLC called Rise and Fall. This game series is a legend in the gaming community. We can call the game, without a doubt, the best strategy game ever made. Really this is not an exaggeration.
The sixth addition to the franchise brought many new features to the game, and with the previously developed concepts and gameplay, one can easily spend many hours lost in building their own civilization.
For those of you that are not acquainted with the game, I will mention the main features briefly. The game is a turned based strategy and resource management game. You have the opportunity to develop your civilization, based on existing cultural horizons. This means that you can choose a cavillation and a complementary leader, each combination has specific features that you can use to get an upper hand in the game. You can form alliances, or fight the other players depending on your overall strategy.
There are several ways you can be victorious, so your only goal during the game can be other things than achieving military and territorial supremacy. You can build world wonders, developed technological and cultural advancements, or spread your religion to the four corners of the globe. Beginning with 4000 years BC your civilization must survive to the modern age and compete survive the political, cultural and military pressure coming from the other nations of the world.
The DLC Rise and Fall came out this year, and it was praised the moment it came out. Besides adding new civilizations and rulers, some of which are truly awesome (like the ruler of Nubia), new gameplay features were also added.
The main feature is the Rise and Fall of your civilization, this is manifested with a special feature. Basically, this means if your civilization advances sufficiently in a given time frame, you will enter a golden age that will grant you special features that you can use in the new era to gain an upper hand against other rulers. Each era can be devoted to a different goal, but if you fail to advance sufficiently you will enter a dark age and your country will start having many problems.
City governors have also been added to the game, and they have special abilities you can use to develop certain aspects of the city. Each governor can be advanced, and this will give them new abilities you can use to your advantage. You can choose from six different governors, and each city can have only one.
City loyalty makes the game more difficult and interesting. You have to be a good ruler, supply the city with amenities, food, and culture or your people will become disloyal and this can influence your country greatly. If the level of loyalty depletes under a certain level the city will rebel and declare their independence. This will make it essayer for your enemies to conquer your territories and beat you.
For all fans of the RPG genre in gaming, there is no better game than The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, with the DLC of Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine. The game has become world famous and some even say that it brought a revolution to the gaming community. It was developed by Project Red, a Polish company that owns the Witcher franchise.
What Makes the Game So Awesome?
One of the main reasons that the game got such a good critical acclaim is the fact that it is based on the novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski. The game follows the life of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher. For those of you that don’t know what that is. Witchers are monster fighters that gain special abilities thru a ritual mutation that makes them superhuman.
Geralt is a complex character that has two sides to his personality, he is both good and bad. Depending on how you want to interpret him. He carries two swords, one made from steel and the other one from silver. The first one is used for killing human monsters, the other one is used for killing real monsters. During the game, you have the opportunity to influence the outcome of the story and believe me you will be surprised and sad if you don’t pay attention.
The storyline is set in a fantastical land, torn by war. You come into the middle of everything and as you finish the quests you will discover more about Geralt and his mega interesting life. Besides meeting the witcher, you will also encounter some of his friends. They are all colorful characters, with authentic life stories. Some of them you will hate, some you will fall in love with.
While you play the game, you are immersed in a wonderful world and story, and sometimes you feel more like you are watching a series or reading an epic fantasy novel, then like playing a video game. One of the reasons I think this game became so popular is the incredible story, and just generally the emotional intensity of the game. Even thou the level of character customization is limited since you are playing as a developed character, the game does not loose on its appeal.
What can we Expect in the Future?
The game franchise has ended, and even though the fans are crying for a fourth part, there is little hope that that will happen. The game is so big that I think it will be played for years to come. The problem is in the fact that this game is unmatched, and I cannot imagine how can someone outdo them. The game will certainly make people want to outdo it but I think we will have to wait for a couple of years before that happens.
The industry of gaming has taken the world over, and although we have spent millions of hours playing flat screen games, technology is taking off in the twenty-first century in such a way that we can expect a lot of new things in the industry. Some of them you might have heard, some of them will be a surprise to you. These are just some of the many inventions that are going to make gamers lives more awesome.
In the past decade, we have seen the evolution and their graphics capabilities. This change can be noted easily and one can find himself with a difficult task of not knowing whether the scene is from a video game or from a movie scene. A movement is building up and its main goal is to develop a way to make digital entertainment more immersive.
With the advances in technology research hardware components are drastically improving, and this is giving VR a come back to the gaming industry. We are being surprised daily with the new advancements in the Oculus technology, and it is no longer so far from the common man that we think of it as science fiction.
Secondary Screens for Gaming
The main gaming brands, with their respective playing consoles, are competing more and more every day. This is creating a market filled with new gadgets, and among the newest additions is the idea of a secondary playing device.
The Wii U has a touchscreen, and in the shooter games, the second screen lets you access your inventory without leaving the field of the game. SmartGlass what Microsoft brought forth as their solution for Xbox, the difference compared to the previous invention is that this is actually an app for your smartphone. Sony has also taken their first steps to develop their solution to the problem, bringing the Cross-Play to the scene. PlayStation 3 consoles can now be linked on their handheld device, this gives you the opportunity to stop playing on one device and resume on another.
Augmented Reality (AR)
This type of game uses your surroundings and places virtual objects and quests in it using your screen and camera. You play the game by interacting with this fusion of virtual and practical reality. These games will open up many new gaming solutions, and I am sure we can expect a lot from this development.
Virtual Reality is no longer just science fiction. From education to healthcare, the application of VR is changing. Gaming together with social behavior and new technologies is being connected on a technological and scientific level. This fusion is going to transform the manner in which we behave and experience certain situations, but this also, allows game designers to develop new games and experiences.
What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual reality is a principle of immersion of the human senses, the idea is to replace all the natural seances with artificial stimulation and virtual projections so that the person gets a feeling of existing in a world completely different than ours.
Although most of us envision the classic image of the plastic space type helmet over the eyes the technology for the complete emersion of players into a fiction gaming world has significantly evolved. These changes can be noted in the sound and touch systems that are being developed. All of this with the sole goal of making a machine that can take you completely away from this world into a new one with its specific sounds, smells, and bodily sensations.
The Impossible Becomes Possible
The virtual reality technologies help to create a world of creativity, that can break the problems encountered in conventional learning methods. Children, for instance, learn best by playing and working with their hands. The argument is that they shouldn’t just read about history they should be able to live history and to be historians. Imagine a time travel game that takes you back to ancient Egypt, where you can experience their lifestyle.
Generally, gamers are perceived as being anti-social or depressed, but this is far from the truth. As we gamers know we are actually wary communicative if we are properly stimulated. Imagine the communication between players that can be achieved in virtual reality. Imagine resolving a fight with a loved one in a VR surrounding where you cannot hurt anybody.
When it comes to Syberia II and the problems you can encounter while playing, the developers have tried to resolve with some new patches. The thing is that the game is old and it belongs to a different era of gaming. Well not that different, but you get a general idea. Since 2004 a lot has happened in the gaming industry, not to mention to the franchise with the release of Syberia III. What can we say about the second part of the game? How was it different from the original?
Technically, Siberia 2 is noticeably better-looking than its predecessor, despite some of the remote locations lacking in diversity. The pre-rendered backgrounds and scenery are gorgeous, sharp and bright. Structures made of bone and natural materials are both rustic and intricate.
The puzzles have been influenced so they are now more accessible. But some of the items that can be found are easy to miss due to some odd camera angles. The familiar point-and-click adventure workload of ‘find a correct object for the task’ or ‘talk to the right person to get a hint’ is still being practiced, but the flow of the game can be affected by the inconsistent scenarios. Still, the experience is relaxing and.
The tone and subject matter of the Syberia games thus far have felt like looking through a window to an era, almost resembling a novel about a past age. It is true that a certain degree of mystery that made the first game so engaging does take a back seat here in favor of a more personal journey.
Syberia 2 is a curious creation, as it improves on, but it is also inferior to the original game. The gameplay is much shorter and players new to the series will have the classic first installment reduced to a short intro. The environments look great, despite their age, and the flow is advanced with more streamlined puzzles.
The Game as a Whole
The game has many bugs and issue that have to be resolved so that it can achieve its full potential. Even though it has slight imperfections, the game has had significant acclaim, and people love to play it. There are not so many problems in the game, and the bugs are at the minimum. Some situations might frustrate you, but all in all, it is a great experience and story.
There are a lot of video games and just as many wallpapers that represent what the game is all about. Even though we don’t like to judge a book by its cover, sometimes the cover is all we have to follow to find the right game for you. Making a representation of a thing that is complex as a video game in a single photo can be a real challenge, not to mention the fact that if you don’t do it right it can greatly influence the sales of the game, at least in the first period.
Wallpapers are Art
One often forgets that game making is an art form, that combines a lot of different media into a single product, that can take away your life for hours at a time. There is a lot of artistic craftsmanship that goes into designing games, not to mention the creativity that you need in order to invent a world that doesn’t exist or to reconstruct the one we are in now.
The process comes to an end when the product gets its cover or the wallpaper. This is something that we use to represent the game, and it is a meant to drag us to the cash register and pay the game. They are often vibrant and dynamic, displaying the characters that you will encounter in the game.
Other times they just represent a symbol that we can encounter in the game or some other authentic representation of a part of the game. These features are used so that the games receive a universally recognizable mark, that people treat like a brand.
Sometimes these wallpapers become like posters, that we hang proudly on the wall. They associate us with the game, give us an identity marker and make us feel good when we look at them. First of all, because they remind us of the game. They are pieces of art that were made for our enjoyment. They are decorative and instantly recognizable. And they carry unique and authentic emotion that only we the gamers know because they associate us with the achievements and thought we had while we played.
One of the big lies about gamers is that they’re all anti-social. In my experience, the flipside is true: gamers love to socialize, jut not in real life. That’s why we have so many huge gaming forums.
Like sports, people have found a different way to enjoy games not just by playing them. Gaming podcasts have been around for a while, and recently, there’s been a shift in interest towards watching other people play games. Even thou people like to watch other people play games forums will never go out of fashion, as the following gaming communities are demonstrating just by their existence. And I can say they don’t show signs of stopping any time soon.
NeoGAF was first launched as the website Gaming-Age Forums in 1999, the purpose of the site was to be a message board for Gaming-Age. The website in question was made for gaming news and reviews, and you can still find them on the internet in some database. By the year 2003, the forum’s database was corrupted for some reason, and in 2004 the forum reinvented itself as NeoGAF. It is among the top 1000 most-visited websites in the USA and it is also the biggest gaming forum that currently exists on the Web. People often refer to this website as a mega forum because it has over 700,000 threads and 95 million posts.
GameFAQs was the first website of its kind and it was launched in 1995, this also makes it the oldest gaming website that has survived at least two decades on the Internet. It started its existence as a repository for walkthroughs written by users and FAQs about different games, but then it eventually included other aspects of gamer information like reviews and forum discussions. The website is different from others that are like it because it has a special message board for every video game in the database of the website.
IGN passes over many different kinds of media and entertainment topics. However, its main focus is on gaming. The center of the website is organized around news and reviews, but it also publishes other content sometimes. IGN’s forums include many different topics that often go away from video games into some strange places, but the gaming industry and video games are at the heart of this website. This community is visited by cultured people, who are not obsessed with fighting their fellow forum visitors.
Demo games are an excellent way to find the perfect game for you; especially when they are free. This is why I want to talk about some of the websites where you can get demo games and play them until you find what you want. Maybe you just want to try something new or sample the different games that are out there. In any case, these websites might be useful for you.
Steam is not only here so you can buy games, they also have a lot of demos of games you can try out for free. The thing is there are so many games you need to use advanced search options in order to find the genre you want.
Scratch is an excellent website you can use to make your own games and animations, but you can share it with other game enthusiasts. The website even has demos of some of the games that are made by the users. Besides the demos, you can try full games, and even try your own skill out by making a game and then getting feedback on it.
The Microsoft store has whole range game demos on offer. Everything from FIFA 2018, and Syberia II over to Doodle God. You can fill your hearts desire in trying out games, and the best thing is that most of them are free.
The thing with these websites is that they offer a place for a community of gamers to develop and to influence the games and their sails. At the same time, they can protect you, the gamer, from making a bad investment. Games cost a lot of money to make, and some of them take a lot of effort that should be rewarded. Sometimes even though there was a big effort the game didn’t turn out like the developers wanted it, and you end up with a bad game and no fun. Or maybe you see a trailer and you think you would like the game, but it turns out to be bad. Demos are an excellent way to prevent yourself from making mistakes like these.
Syberia II is a third person mouse controlled adventure game, that focuses on resolving various puzzles organized around a character that is immersed in an adventure. The obstacles that you encounter are part of a linear storyline. After you resolve the quest the story reveals itself further. The game was developed by Microïds and is a follow up of the game Syberia.
The story follows Kate Walker, who is an American lawyer that quit her job in order to go follow an eccentric inventor to the land of Syberia. They are searching for the last surviving wooly mammoths. The story follows the previous part, and the game begins with Kate sitting on the train with her friend Hans.
After completing the job, he has given her, you will find that the inventor is sicky and in need of Kates assistance; this marks the beginning of the quest. Her path takes her to a local monastery that she visits in order to find a cure for Hans. There is a rumor that a monk living in the monastery has special healing abilities. After finding the monk in question and pleasing him, so that he would help her friend, Kates adventure begins.
The second part of the game was improved by the game developers and the mistakes that were noted in the previous part where resolved to a certain extent. The game is organized around finding and using certain objects that you find scattered around the game. Over the course of playing, you will have to solve riddles with the objects you have collected previously.
Even thou the gameplay looks simple the riddles themselves will give you a hard time. Some of them are intelligent and interesting, you can expect a couple of really hard ones. Some of them are not thought thru but non-the less they don’t take away from the game.
The graphic in Syberia II have not changed since the previous part, but there have been significant changes in the NPC’s and their role in the story development and quest solving. Also, the environment is more populated than the previous part, and the content has more detail.
